What are Chakras…

Prior to learning about chakras my understanding about them was based on hearsay. Chakras were described as something dark, evil, and pagan. Since working with my chakras I know that is the furthest from the truth! Whether it gets acknowledged or not our chakras exist and impact our wellbeing.

I have provided us a brief outline on chakras and some yoga poses to help with balancing them. Yes, us because the “teacher” is always the student. This platform is created for us to grow together! To ensure accuracy, I will update this post as needed.

Be sure to leave a comment at the bottom and share your experiences. Chat with you soon!

The term chakra is usually used to describe the energetic astral body. The astral body is perceived as a less dense version of the physical body. The word chakra translates in Sanskrit as “disk” or “wheel”.  These wheels or disk are spinning vibrations that are associated with specific nerves and major organs.

We can develop an emotional report card about our health by looking at the different chakras. We can also develop preventative treatment by assessing the different chakras.

To achieve our best wellness, our chakras need to be balanced and open. If they become unbalanced or blocked we may develop physical and emotional side effects associated with that chakra.

The functions of the chakras are similar to the five sense organs in the physical body: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin. They provide information and insight about the environment around and within us. Chakras provide energy to the body, mind, and organs.

There are seven primary chakras located in the astral body: root, sacral, solar, heart, throat, third eye, and crown chakra. The primary chakras can be classified into three groups: lower, middle, and higher.

The lower consist of the root and the sacral. At the base of the spin lies the root chakra.  The root is the first chakra because this is where creation began. The root  activates the other chakras providing vibrations that influence them to expand their vibrational frequency. The color red  is associated with the root. Your root is responsible for feelings of  security and stability.

Just below the navel is the sacral chakra. The sacral is the second Chakra and is associated with the color orange. Known to influence emotions, creativity, and how we express ourselves sexually. Ever had a gut feeling? Yep that's your sacral.

The middle consists of the solar plexus, heart, and the throat. The solar plexus is the third chakra. Located four fingers above the navel associated with the color yellow. This chakra influences our ability to make wise decisions, and assert ourselves with confidence.

The heart chakra is the fourth located at the heart and is associated with the color green. Governing our relationships. This chakra influences our ability to give and receive love.

The throat chakra is the fifth chakra located on the throat and is associated with the color blue. This chakra influences communication. The ability to express yourself, being heard, and active listening is associated with the throat chakra.

Higher chakras are the third eye and the crown. The third eye is the sixth chakra located in between the eyebrows and is associated with the color purple. Known to govern our unconscious mind, perception, and awareness. The crown chakra is the seventh chakra located at the top of the head. Represented by the color violet. This chakra is known to give a sense of spiritual awareness and connection to the divine. This awareness that we are first spiritual beings experiencing what it is like to be human.

When it comes to balancing our chakras we can use many methods to get us to equilibrium. However, Yoga is known to provide the mind body connection while releasing unwanted tension.  In yoga we can practice specific yoga poses and breathing patterns to energize the chakras. Best practice is to use intentional breathing/movement but all movement can help bring balance and strengthen the chakras.

I have provided images of specific yoga poses for each chakra. In a later post I will provide detailed steps on  how to do these various poses, there benefits, and how they can support the chakra so be sure to check back each week!
